Two types: (a) Point of use instantaneous water heater — installed at or near a plumbing fixture/battery of fixtures and used to service those fixtures alone. Used when it would be too difficult to tie into an existing hot water source or when a small bathroom sink has been added and has a limited need for hot water. (b) Tankless water heater – a high capacity heater used to serve multiple locations. Heats water on demand by pulling water through a heat exchanger.
